Odyssey: The Way Home - a quest on board a yacht in Dubai

Odyssey: The Way Home is a quest played on board a yacht in Dubai, built for birthdays and private celebrations rather than for corporate training. It runs for 10 to 40 guests depending on the boat, starts from one hour and is delivered through tablets with our own game app, so nothing has to be printed or explained twice. The legend is simple: the ship has lost its course, the way home is closed and the coordinates of Ithaca have been broken into fragments. Every trial passed returns one fragment - a word, a number, a piece of a coordinate - and the voyage ends when the guests assemble the final code and the screen tells them the way home is open.

Odyssey: The Way Home

After a long voyage the ship has lost its course. The gods have closed the way to Ithaca, and the coordinates of home have been broken into pieces scattered across the sea. To return, the crew has to pass the trials of Odysseus and put the route back together.

That is the whole frame, and it fits a yacht perfectly: there is nowhere to go, the sea is all around, and for the next hour the guests are a crew rather than a group of people holding glasses.

The programme is divided into chapters, and each team has a tablet with the game app where the tasks appear and the answers go in. Some of the trials are built around the senses.

The Sirens play several layers of sound at once: voices, music, the noise of the sea, fragments of messages - and the crew has to listen past all of it to work out what is hidden in the black box.

The Eye of the Cyclops hands over mirrored goggles

The Oracle never speaks directly, so one guest draws a word - storm, ship, eye, island, fire, home - without looking at what the pen is doing, and the rest read the signs.

Other trials send the crew around the boat. A closed pouch with five objects to identify by touch alone. A real sailor's knot, tied from a photograph in the app. Symbols drawn in invisible ink in a dim cabin, found with a UV flashlight. A bottle somewhere on board with a QR code inside it and a recorded message from Penelope asking her question.

Every trial returns a fragment of the code.

At the end a laptop is opened on deck with one line on the screen: RETURN TO ITHACA. The guests work out the right sequence from everything they collected over the voyage and enter the final code. The screen answers: THE WAY HOME IS OPEN. Then the sea is just the sea again, and the evening carries on.

Missions

The trials of Odysseus

Sound, touch, taste and one message in a bottle. Each trial returns a fragment of the way home.

The Oracle

The Oracle never speaks directly. One guest receives a card with a word or symbol — storm, ship, eye, island, fire, home - and has to draw it without looking at the drawing surface, while the rest read what came out.

Mystery Bag

A closed pouch holds five objects: a shell, a coin, a key, an olive and a piece of rope. They are identified by touch alone, with no looking and no second attempt.

UV Symbols

Symbols are drawn in invisible ink in a dim cabin and only exist under a UV flashlight. The crew searches the cabin in the dark for marks that are there the whole time.

Penelope's Message

Somewhere on board there is a bottle with a QR code inside it. Scanning it plays a recorded message from Penelope, and in it is her question - the answer returns another fragment of the code.
