Terra Incognita: an indoor expedition team building for teams in Dubai

Terra Incognita is an indoor expedition team building that SL PEOPLE EVENTS runs for corporate teams in Dubai and across the UAE. It takes between 1.5 and 3 hours depending on how many rounds are played, works for 30 to 100 participants and runs in English and Russian. The group is divided into expeditions of ten, each choosing its own name and captain and each equipped with a tablet running our own game app. The expeditions scout for clues, complete prop-based and one-minute challenges, then draw their own fragment of an unknown continent on canvas and build its landmarks out of construction bricks. The map is the point: no expedition can finish alone, because rivers and roads have to run across the borders without breaks, and the continent only exists once every fragment is joined into one.

Terra Incognita

The Emirates grew out of trade routes. Ships went beyond the horizon, caravans crossed the desert, and nothing came back unless people could reach an agreement. Prosperity here was never built by one crew sailing alone.

Terra Incognita starts from that idea. The room is divided into expeditions of ten, each with its own name, its own captain and its own tablet, and each with a fragment of a continent nobody has mapped yet.

For the first part of the game the expeditions work apart. Codes, star navigation, audio and photo riddles, questions that need logic rather than knowledge: every correct answer earns a clue about the map - which part of the land to look for, and exactly where. Then the teams leave their tables. They meet in pairs for challenges with props and for one-minute tasks where a different member of the expedition steps up each time, so almost everyone ends up playing rather than watching.

The second half is where the game turns. Each expedition receives a canvas with the outline of its fragment and a grid like a chessboard, a set of pastels and a map legend. Sea, dunes, mountains, roads, oases - all of it goes on the canvas, but only in the cells the clues point to.

And then the rule that decides everything: rivers and roads must continue into the neighbouring fragment without a break. Which means the captains have to get up, walk over to the expedition next to them and agree on where exactly the river crosses the border. A team that draws beautifully but negotiates badly ends up with a river that stops at the edge of its own canvas.

While one part of the expedition draws, the rest build the landmarks of their land out of construction bricks - a lighthouse for reliability, a trade ship for commerce, a fortress for resilience. There are no instructions. One person is allowed to look at the sample for one minute, with no phone and no notes, then come back and explain it from memory. Three times, and a different person goes each time.

At the end the fragments are joined. The continent appears only when every canvas is in place, the landmarks are set on their cells, and the whole room agrees on a name for the new land. Everyone signs the map, and the company keeps it.

How the expedition runs

How the expedition runs

Five rounds and a finale. The first half earns the clues, the second half turns them into a continent. The number of rounds is set by the group size and the time available.

  1. 01
    Scouting

Each expedition works at its own table with a tablet running our game app. The app offers tasks on three levels - easy, medium and challenging - and the team decides for itself where to start. Codes and clues, star navigation, AI-based tasks, audio and photo riddles, video challenges and questions on logic and creativity. Every correct answer returns a clue about the map: which part of the land to look for, and where exactly it belongs.

  2. 02
    Missions

The expeditions leave their tables and meet in pairs for challenges with props. A ten-question quiz about the region and about the team itself runs alongside, one minute per answer. Every challenge earns points and new clues for the map.

  3. 03
    Minute challenges

Expeditions meet in pairs with the game hosts, and each task lasts exactly one minute. A different member of the expedition takes part in each one, so almost everybody plays at least once in this round. Speed matters here, but so does accuracy: the tasks get harder step by step, and one careless move at an early stage shows up in the result at the end.

  4. 04
    Continent map

Each expedition receives a canvas with the outline of its fragment of the continent and a grid like a chessboard, plus pastels and a legend. Sea, shallow water, sand, dunes, plains, oases, mountains, rivers and roads all go onto the canvas - but only in the cells the clues point to, and only in the colours the legend allows. The rule that makes this a team game: rivers and roads have to continue into the neighbouring fragment without a break, so the expeditions have to walk over to their neighbours and agree on every crossing. No team can draw the continent alone. If the company provides them, rivers, forests and lakes are named after its values or its products.

  5. 05
    Continent symbol

While part of the expedition draws, the rest build the landmark of their land out of construction bricks: a lighthouse for reliability and guidance in any weather, a trade ship for commerce and tradition, a fortress for wisdom and resilience. There are no instructions at the table. One participant may go to the host and look at the sample for one minute, with no phone and no notes, then return and explain it from memory while the others build on trust alone.

  6. 06
    One continent

All the fragments are joined into a single map and every landmark is placed on it. The continent only becomes visible when all the canvases are connected until then each expedition has been looking at a fraction of the picture. The room chooses a name for the new land and everybody signs it. The map goes home with the company as the reminder that the continent appeared only because the expeditions stopped working as separate teams.
